Mandates for Sustainable Cities: Writings Series Volume I
The Norman Foster Foundation launches the first installment of a new series of publications: 'Mandates for Sustainable Cities: Writings Series Volume I'.
The book presents Norman Foster’s sketches for the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe’s (UNECE) report ‘Place and Life in the UNECE – A Regional Action Plan 2030: Tackling challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic, climate and housing emergencies in region, city, neighbourhood and homes’. Accompanied by carefully chosen texts that further illustrate the key ideas from the report, the sketches illustrate the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as highlighted by the UNECE.
The sketches illustrate the creation of sustainable and inclusive cities through attention to affordable housing, urban density, participatory and local planning, neighbourhoods, renewable energy and public space. Furthermore, they present visions of city planning that incorporate concepts of such as energy efficient housing, sensitivity to local culture and values, the upgrading of informal settlements and access to green spaces.
