The Norman Foster Foundation publishes Healthy Cities Public Debates
January 10, 2026
The Norman Foster Foundation presents Healthy Cities Public Debates, a new publication bringing together the three public debates organised in collaboration with its Health Patron, Sanitas, between 2023 and 2025. The volume addresses one of the central challenges of our time: how to create healthier and more sustainable cities in which people can thrive.
The book features contributions from fourteen experts whose fields span architecture, urbanism, healthcare, politics and environmental research: Joseph G. Allen, Yolanda Arbizu Erburu, Iñaqui Carnicero, Beatriz Colomina, Mario Cucinella, Catherine Cummings, Nigel Dancey, Norman Foster, Kathryn Gustafson, María Neira, Mark J. Nieuwenhuijsen, Marina Romanello, Susana Saiz and Giselle Sebag. Presented in written form, the debates combine keynote interventions, round-table discussions and a curated selection of images. The publication includes a foreword by Norman Foster and an introductory chapter by Joseph G. Allen, Director of the Healthy Buildings Program at Harvard University.
Structured into three chapters corresponding to the annual debates, Healthy Cities Public Debates serves as a practical handbook for improving cities today and in the future, contributing to the Foundation’s ongoing research into the built environment and urban health.
The publication forms part of the Norman Foster Foundation’s Public Debates programme, developed since 2017 as an open forum for interdisciplinary discussion, and reflects its partnership with Sanitas to promote healthier urban environments.
